Grab Bag Descriptions

If your child is PreK-Grade 1, see our Mini and Mighty Gator programs. The descriptions below are for Grades 2-8.

3D MODELING AND PRINTING (GRADES 2-8) DOUBLE PERIOD
The world of 3D printing is exploding! Campers get to spend a double-period exploring how 3D printing technology is changing how the world makes and builds things. Learn the basics of various 3D model creation software and apps to create 3D objects such as keychains, figurines, works of art and more.  

BABYSITTING 101 (Grades 6-8 AND must be age 11+)  DOUBLE PERIOD
Join Alana Pitcher, RN, an American Heart Association and Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified Instructor as she teaches this Babysitter’s Training course. Note: Students must be eleven years or older by the start of camp and must successfully attend/complete all 5 days of classes to receive a Red Cross certificate.

CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA (GRADES 5-8)  DOUBLE PERIOD
Campers will act as professional boat builders and sailors as they work in teams to design and build human-powered boats using only cardboard and duct tape.  Additional floating challenges and projects will round out the week. At the end of the week, teams will race their boats across the Stone Ridge pool in front of their cheering camper friends. Whether campers sink or make it to the finish line, they’re going to have a blast!

CARTOONING (GRADES 4-8)
Create a comic collection in your very own cartooning book. Learn how to draw your favorite
cartoon characters step by step or create your own cartoon characters that come to life. Then create single panel gags or multi-paneled “newspaper” style strips in black and white and color. Maybe one of your strips will run in the camp blog!

CLAY CREATIONS (GRADES 2-8)
Let your imagination run wild! Come have fun building clay sculptures of your choice. Create collections of food, magical villages, vehicles, monsters, bowls, plates cups, or treasure boxes. There is no limit to the fun sculptures that you can create. You will learn pinch, coil and slab building techniques to create your pieces.  You will also use amazingly colorful glazes to decorate your pieces. Be sure to wear clothes you are not afraid to get dirty, because we are going to have fun playing in the mud!

COMPUTERS (GRADES 2-8)
Each camper will explore the world of computers at their own Mac station. Depending on age, kids will use programs such as Pixie, Microsoft Office, Kidspiration, and more. We will explore fun websites where campers can get creative and design their own stickers, window clings and other works of art. Each camper will come home with their own folder of projects.

CODING WITH SPHEROS (Grades 4-8)
Calling all BB-8 Star Wars fans! This new hands-on one week experience provides campers an opportunity to play while learning the fundamentals of block programming and coding using Sphero, one of the world's smallest programmable robots. Sphero technology is based on the robot BB-8 character from the Star Wars Series. Working collaboratively, campers will participate in a range of activities to include programming their Sphero to paint a mural, compete in a Robotics Summer Olympics (bowling, maze completion, track and field events, and swimming), and getting their Sphero to dance to create their own TikTok video! 

COOL CRAFTS (GRADES 2-8)
Ranked as our #1 class, campers can’t get enough of Cool Crafts! This class is jam-packed with creative experiences from our classic themes to our new projects.  Whether they are building with tiles, creating tie-dyed masterpieces or making candy sushi, campers can’t resist this whirlwind adventure combining the best of crafts, candy, and one-of-a-kind experiences.

DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION (GRADES 2-8)
Try a variety of dance styles including jazz, contemporary, and lyrical.  Whether you're a beginner or a dance expert, you'll have fun learning new choreography and advancing your technique.  This high energy class will dance to both popular and classical music.  

DIVING (GRADES 2-8)
Join favorite Stone Ridge Aquatics Director Bob Walker in this popular class designed for the beginning springboard diver. Skills to be taught include the forward approach step, front and back take-offs, tuck, pike, straight and twisting positions, and front and back dives. Each child will progress at his or her own pace in this class while learning basic diving skills. There will be a low-key, no pressure diving exhibition at the end of the week for campers to show off what they have learned to their peers.

ECO ART & NATURE'S CRAFTS  (GRADES 2-8)  
Your camper is invited to create at his or her own pace in this newly designed, open-ended process art experience. Whether your child is the next Picasso or one who just likes to get creative, our Eco Art & Nature's Craft class delivers one week of hands-on artistic adventure. Our creative studio is the perfect place for tinkering, making decisions, troubleshooting and making connections using recycled items materials found in nature.

FREE SWIM (GRADES 2-8)
Have fun with your friends while lounging in an inner tube, playing with pool noodles, or jumping off the diving board. Campers must pass our swim test in order to swim without one of our Stone Ridge swim vests.

GATOR GAMES (GRADES 2-8)
How much excitement can we pack into one class? Try us! This camp favorite features daily fun competitions in such games as Capture the Flag, Dodgeball, Indoor Hockey, Wiffle Ball, Kickball, and more. This class requires active participation, so bring your sneakers and your energy! 

GATOR GAZETTE (GRADES 4-8) 
Our roving reporters will work in this computer class to create our own Gator Gazette blog. Students will learn to design our own blog newspaper including articles, photos, interviews, reviews, and weekly news updates. Kids will use programs such as Microsoft Office, Learn to Type, and more. 

GATOR STRONG (GRADES 5-8)
Join this awesome new fun fitness class taught by the Stone Ridge certified athletic trainer and learn ways to improve your overall fitness, strength, agility and quickness. Classes are held in our renovated Fitness Center and an emphasis will be placed on injury prevention and quality movement patterns. The program will include proper weight training techniques (i.e. proper mechanics and usage of free weights, cable stacks, and weight machines.) Must wear sneakers & socks to class and be ready to work out while having a blast! 

GATOR TANK (GRADES 6-8) DOUBLE PERIOD
Do you love to watch Shark Tank?  Are you the camper who runs the lemonade stands in your front yard to make some spending money? Want to know what it takes to make that business grow? What risks are you willing to take? What rewards are you hoping to gain? You'll have the chance to hear from a variety of people in the business world about how to take an idea and turn it into a profit. You will then have the opportunity to develop a product of your own and pitch it to your other campers. Think you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur? Find out with Gator Tank, starting this summer at Stone Ridge. This class is taught by Stone Ridge Upper School Asst. Dean of Students and former Economics and Public Issues teacher Ms. Kimi Falatko and may only be taken once/summer.

GATORS SING OFF-BROADWAY (GRADES 2-8) FULL DAY
Spend a full, magical Musical Theater day developing acting skills through improv exercises and role playing, singing show tunes, designing costumes, creating creative backdrops, applying theatrical makeup and more! Join us and learn the ins and outs of theater production. Our talented staff will help your child learn to shine on stage and work in a group to pull together a memorable show at the conclusion of the week. Week 2 theme: Charlie & Chocolate Factory; Week 6 theme: High School Musical.

GIMP 101 (GRADES 2-8)
Campers can't get enough of this traditional camp craft!  Learn how to start your own gimp project and make more difficult designs such as cobra, zipper, double barrel and double box, Campers will go home with their own hand-made keychains and crafts.

GOLF PERFORMANCE CAMP (GRADES 4-8) DOUBLE PERIOD
Work with the Peak Golf Fitness company and work on golf skills here at Stone Ridge this summer!  SMASH stands for Stability, Mobility, Athleticism, Sports Skills, Hone Golf Skills.  SMASH ZONE classes are designed to create, build and emphasize athletic skills in junior golfers. This class is for campers who have expressed an interest in playing golf. Junior golfers are introduced to beginning and intermediate level shot making skills and physical fitness routines here on campus using our outdoor fields and gymnasiums. At the end of this class, students should be able to understand shot making skills and how athleticism and fitness will help them in golf and other sports.  

VIRTUAL GRAMMAR BOOTCAMP (GRADES 6-7) DOUBLE PERIOD 9:00-11:30 a
June 15-19

This virtual course provides students with an overview of basic grammar skills necessary for clear writing and expression. Students will meet daily in live virtual sessions (45 mins) and will be provided with activities to practice the concepts and skills learned (60 mins). In addition to guided practice, students will be given access to computer-based gameplay to enhance learning.

 

 The goals of the program include an enriched understanding of basic grammar as well as improved fluency and sentence structure in written work. The students will review the parts of speech, sentence construction, and punctuation necessary for effective communication and writing.

HIP HOP (GRADES 2-8)
Want to learn how to dance like the dancers in some of your favorite shows and movies? We can show you. Come learn spunky, high-energy dance routines featuring funky, hip-hop moves. Campers will learn choreographed routines as well as develop their own dance routines to popular music. 

INNER TUBE WATER POLO (GRADES 3-8)
Grab an inner tube and play this easy-to-learn, fast-paced but super fun team pool game. Race to score as many goals as you can against your opponents while paddling across the pool. 

JEWELRY MAKING (GRADES 2-8)
Learn to make beautiful earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and more.  Campers will practice skills such as beading, weaving, knotting, and creating clasps in a fun, collaborative and creative atmosphere.

LEGOS, LOGS & LINKS (GRADES 2-8)
Stone Ridge Science and Engineering Specialist Dr. Winter is calling all kids who like to build masterpieces with their hands! Let’s go “retro” and use classic building materials such as Legos, Lincoln Logs and K’nex in this class designed to encourage creative building and exploration.  Build skyscrapers, cabins, race cars and more in daily building challenges. 

MAD SCIENTISTS (GRADES 2-8)
Help! Our mad scientist needs campers like YOU to help run experiments, concoct new contraptions, and explore science and nature inside and outside of the classroom. Choose from themed weeks (see below) that have a variety of classic and new experiments and activities. Choose different themed weeks in order to not repeat projects.

MAKEDO CARDBOARD CONSTRUCTION (GRADES 2-8)
Join favorite Stone Ridge Science and Engineering Specialist Dr. Winter in this hands-on class using Makedo tools, cardboard & imagination to tackle daily challenges! Makedo is a cardboard construction system for 21st century thinking, making and play that helps you make anything imaginable of any size from a flower to a fort, a mask to a maze. Makedo creations set the stage for immersive, creative and open-ended play where the child is protagonist in a hack-able world of their own making. Daily challenges will be tackled where campers get to make costumes, machines, toys, vehicles, furniture, creatures, anything your child can dream up!

MAKE A VILLAGE (GRADES 2-8)
Dr. Winter has designed this new class for campers to use the Makedo tools, cardboard & imagination to make a village together! What makes a village? Houses? People? Pets? Vehicles? Campers will create, paint & decorate everything in their village and then will have a chance to show it off to other campers.  Makedo creations set the stage for immersive, creative and open-ended play where the child is protagonist in a hack-able world of their own making.  

MONKEYS IN MOTION (GRADES 2-3)
Our younger campers will love this non-competitive, active class where they will play tag games, build forts and structures with gymnastic mats, race with scooters, and play various P.E. type games in our gymnasium.This is a terrific active alternative for kids not quite ready for the more intense competition of  Gator Games.

MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP (GRADES 2-8)
Students will work towards becoming a “triple threat” in this high energy class!  We will sing show tunes, learn Broadway style dance moves, and play theater games. The themes for each session are as follows: Week 5: Descendants 2; Week 6: Frozen 2. 

PHOTOGRAPHY (GRADES 4-8) Stone Ridge tech guru Mr. Rick Alfonso will show campers the basics of digital photo composition while taking portraits, landscapes, action shots, and more!  We will also spend time learning how to manipulate images with photo software. Students will have access to their digital images to share with their family. We'll post your photos to your own Google Photos site that you can share with families and even print some digital photos and even one 13 in x 19 in color photo to finish the photography class.

ROBOTICS (GRADES 5-8) DOUBLE PERIOD
We are so excited to offer this popular, cutting edge Robotics program. Campers get to spend all afternoon in this hands-on, team based course. Robotics is ideal for girls and boys who love to build and want to learn mechanical and programming concepts. Campers will be grouped in small teams as they create their robots using a LEGO Mindstorms robotics kit. They program their robots to solve a series of challenges, culminating in a competition on the last day of camp.
 
ROCKET SCIENCE (GRADES 4-8)
Favorite Stone Ridge Upper School science teacher Will Robertson will help campers build and launch rockets that they will have designed and assembled from scratch. Students will learn basic concepts in rocketry and aerodynamics and will apply this knowledge to their rocket designs. With each new and improved design they will see for themselves that there is a science to rocket building. Enrollment is limited for this unique class as it is only offered one period per session. Camper may only sign up for this class one session per summer.

SPORTS ACADEMY (GRADES 2-8) DOUBLE PERIOD
Hey sports fans, the double-period is BACK by popular demand! How would you like to play your favorite field and gym sports every day with enthusiastic and knowledgeable coaches & counselors and then end your week with an awesome “Laser Tag Friday” experience? Join us for both traditional sports and non-traditional wacky games all played in good fun. Join our all-star Sports Academy staff and enjoy the best summer of your life! 

STOP MOTION VIDEO FACTORY (GRADES 3-8)
Ever wonder how some of those incredible short films are made? In this class, you will learn how to make a group stop motion video by creating your own story, taking photos, and piecing together a great video using our iMacs.

STRINGS & THINGS (GRADES 2-8)
Sewing enthusiasts will love to get their hands on a needle and thread in this popular class which teaches the basics of knitting, embroidery, basic weaving and original designs. Spend an enjoyable class period with beloved instructor Louise Bradford creating your masterpiece!

SUPER SOCCER (GRADES 2-8)
What do you get when you combine indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, fun scrimmages and fundamental skill work? An awesome soccer extravaganza! Join favorite Stone Ridge soccer coach Juan Velasquez for this new class. Sneakers required.

SWIM CLINIC (GRADES 2-8)
Whether you are a beginner who needs to learn how to swim or a swimmer who doesn’t have time for morning practice, our pool staff will divide our swim clinic into three levels– Beginners, Intermediate, and Swim Team.
Beginners: This class is appropriate if your child is comfortable in the pool, but needs help putting his/her face underwater. Your child will be taught the front glide, kicking, back float, and the basic freestyle stroke, along with swim safety skills in a fun, safe environment.
Intermediates: If your child can swim twenty-five yards freestyle and tread water for one minute, this is the class for him/her. Drills will be taught in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Starts and turns will be introduced.
Swim Team: This class will be instructed with swim team drills to keep them trained and prepared for their swim meets. 

TINY CHEFS (GRADES 2-8) DOUBLE PERIOD

TINKER LAB (GRADES 2-8)
Tinkering is all about the creative process. Guided by Stone Ridge Science and Engineering Specialist Dr. Winter, campers will be encouraged to problem solve daily challenges on their own, ask questions, and get their hands messy in their quest to figure how something works. Have fun with your friends building and inventing using a unique array of tools, equipment and materials, upcycled and craft materials, and, of course, natural materials collected from campus!

TOTALLY TRENDY CRAFTS (GRADES 2-8)
Calling all fashionistas!  Create no-sew fashion accessories like duct tape bags, hair accessories, and locker bling.  Go ahead and get ready to make a fashion statement as you design these totally trendy crafts!

UKULELE (GRADES 2-8)
It's summer so why not learn how to play the tropical version of guitar - the ukulele!  We have our own ukuleles so you just need to show up ready to play in this group lesson. We are delighted to welcome back professional musician and GIGS owner Sean Gaiser, Stone Ridge music teacher Jamie Golembiewski and friends to teach these group ukulele lessons.
